Branched-Chain Fatty Acids (BCFA)

Branched-Chain Fatty Acid (BCFA) analysis provides a focused readout of microbial fermentation of the branched-chain amino acids valine, leucine, and isoleucine. It is best used as a practical indicator of whether undigested protein or amino acids are reaching the hindgut and being fermented by the microbiota.

How to choose between protein fermentation markers?

These analyses answer different biological questions. BCFA is the compact marker of branched-chain amino acid fermentation. Protein Fermentation Products show whether aromatic, putrefactive metabolites such as indoles and phenols are accumulating. Biogenic Amines + Ammonia captures microbial decarboxylation, nitrogen waste, and bioactive amines linked to dysbiosis and gut stress. Used together, they separate fermentation intensity, metabolite quality, and microbial stress response.

Where it helps?

  • Shows whether branched-chain amino acid fermentation is increased, especially when excess protein escapes digestion.
  • Supports protein digestibility, amino acid balance, and protease efficacy studies.
  • Helps compare carbohydrate-driven fermentation with protein-driven fermentation when interpreted together with VFA-L.
  • Provides a compact screening marker for formulation changes, raw material comparisons, weaning transitions, and gut health challenges.
  • For feed additive companies, BCFA offers a clear mechanism-linked endpoint for showing reduced hindgut protein fermentation pressure.

How does it work?

We typically analyze feces or digesta (e.g., ileum/cecum/colon), depending on the biological question and study design.

  • Feces: practical for routine monitoring and field applications.
  • Digesta: provides more detailed, compartment-specific insights in controlled trials.

Our BioFreeze™ kits support convenient sampling, reliable preservation, and smooth logistics.

What do we measure?

BCFA are produced from microbial fermentation of branched-chain amino acids (valine, leucine, isoleucine):

  • Isobutyrate – derived from valine; indicator of protein breakdown.
  • Isovalerate – derived from leucine; linked to microbial protein fermentation intensity.
  • 2-methylbutyrate – derived from isoleucine; complements interpretation of total BCFA production.

Interpretation context

  • Elevated BCFA typically indicate increased fermentation of branched-chain amino acids, rather than the full spectrum of putrefactive metabolites.
  • BCFA analysis is best interpreted as a compact marker of protein fermentation intensity, while Protein Fermentation Products provide deeper insight into aromatic metabolites and potential epithelial stress.

Typical use cases

  • Protease evaluation: demonstrate improved protein digestibility and reduced hindgut fermentation.
  • Weaning transition: monitor shifts toward undesirable fermentation patterns.
  • Diet comparison studies: compare raw materials and formulation strategies.
  • Gut health challenges: evaluate whether dysbiosis is linked to excessive protein fermentation.

Sample types

  • Feces (routine monitoring, on-farm sampling)
  • Digesta (ileum/cecum/colon) from controlled trials
